When you love someone you show them everything you have locked up inside you, and then you give them the key to move in. When it is over you can never go back to the you of the beginning. A chemical process has occurred, and that person no longer exists. You leave with part of them inside you forever. And for them it is the same. They leave uniquely changed from the experience of loving you and knowing another human being so intimately.
And so the Spice Girls were wrong. Two don't become one. The two become different people, now fractured and marked from the relationship like crime scene fingerprints on your soul.
The pain comes from knowing that nothing will be the same again; that you will never be the same again. You become a whiteboard that won't wash clean from ghost stains.
And in the end we all are guilty. You just have to follow the fingerprints.
